ROCK COATINGS:
Found on the rock stacks and occasionally on the rock lines are several different types of surface coatings. They come in several colors and textures and are mineral in nature. They are not the products of weathering .
There are at least two separate types of white rock coatings found on the rock stacks in the Shasta Valley. They appear to serve the same purpose but are of different composition but both have all the appearance of rock with the only common characteristic is being white. Only a couple of instances of the non quartz white coating has been found while on Steamboat Mountain alone there are hundreds to thousands of separate white quartz markings.
As with the white stuff there are more than one red marker.
